Europe has no shortage of payment methods. Consumers can already pay with international card schemes, digital wallets, local account-to-account (A2A) solutions and Open Banking-powered payment services. Yet the payments landscape remains highly fragmented, with different domestic payment methods dominating individual markets.

The European Payments Initiative (EPI) aims to change that. Its consumer-facing brand, Wero, has been developed as a pan-European payment solution that combines instant account-to-account payments with a unified payment scheme and digital wallet.

For merchants, Wero represents more than just another checkout option. It is Europe’s most ambitious effort to create a unified payment ecosystem that supports cross-border commerce, simplifies payment acceptance across multiple markets and strengthens Europe’s own payment infrastructure.

Whether Wero will become a true challenger to established payment methods remains to be seen. However, with the backing of major European banks, growing merchant acceptance and an expanding user base, it is already one of the most closely watched developments in the European payments industry.

What is Wero?

Wero is the consumer-facing payment solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) – a consortium of leading European banks and payment service providers working to create a unified payment ecosystem for Europe.

Unlike traditional card payments, Wero is built on SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), enabling customers to make real-time payments directly from their bank accounts. Consumers can access Wero through participating banking apps or, in some markets, via the standalone Wero wallet.

Payments can be initiated by scanning a QR flow for desktop checkouts or by being choosing their bank via on wero’s payment page for mobile flows. For returning Wero consumers, the payment page automatically remembers the user’s last used bank and pre-selects it for them.

Although Wero uses account-to-account payments as its foundation, it is more than another “Pay by Bank” solution. It combines instant payments with a standardized European payment scheme and additional services designed to improve both the consumer and merchant experience.

Why was Wero created?

Europe’s payment market has evolved differently from other regions. While international card schemes dominate cross-border commerce, many countries have also developed their own successful domestic payment methods.

Consumers in the Netherlands are familiar with iDEAL, while France had Paylib and Belgium relied on Payconiq. Other markets have their own local payment solutions, creating additional complexity for merchants selling across borders.

The European Payments Initiative aims to reduce this fragmentation by providing one payment solution that can be used across participating European markets. Rather than replacing existing payment methods overnight, Wero is designed to gradually bring them together under a common European framework.

How does Wero work?

Unlike many account-to-account payment solutions that simply initiate bank transfers, Wero combines three key components:

  • SEPA Instant Credit Transfer for real-time movement of funds.
  • The EPI payment scheme, which establishes common rules for banks, acquirers and merchants.
  • The Wero wallet, providing consumers with a consistent payment experience across participating markets.

This enables merchants to offer customers a secure account-to-account payment method while benefiting from features such as fraud prevention, dispute management and support for modern payment flows.

What are the benefits for merchants?

Faster payments

Because Wero is based on SEPA Instant, payments are processed in real time, helping merchants receive funds more quickly than with traditional bank transfers.

One integration for multiple European markets

As Wero expands, merchants will no longer need to integrate multiple domestic account-to-account payment methods individually. Instead, they will be able to access participating markets through a single payment scheme.

Support for modern e-commerce

EPI’s roadmap extends beyond standard online purchases. Future enhancements to Wero are expected to support a broader range of e-commerce payment scenarios, including:

  • subscriptions,
  • payment upon shipment and delayed capture,
  • one-click payments,
  • QR-code payments,
  • omnichannel commerce.

Security and consumer protection

SCA is required to authenticate each one-off payment. As the scheme expands to additional use cases, such as subscriptions and stored payment credentials, authentication requirements will follow the applicable regulatory framework. In addition, EPI provides fraud prevention measures and a dispute resolution framework designed to protect both merchants and consumers.

Where is Wero available?

Wero is already available for e-commerce in Germany and Belgium, where consumers can pay directly from their bank accounts. The Netherlands is expected to join in 2026, with iDEAL already co-branded as iDEAL | Wero as part of the planned migration to Wero by the end of 2027. Luxembourg is also included in Wero’s future rollout.

According to EPI, Wero has already reached more than 57 million registered users, making it one of the fastest-growing account-to-account payment initiatives in Europe.

Will Wero replace card payments?

Probably not, and it doesn’t need to.

Card payments will remain essential for international commerce, particularly outside Europe. Instead, Wero is expected to complement existing payment methods by offering merchants another way to accept fast, secure account-to-account payments.

Its long-term success will depend on continued support from European banks, increasing merchant acceptance and consumer adoption across more countries.
