About the client
Denník N is a prominent local media outlet with a strong presence in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, known for its focus on high-quality, independent journalism. Its goal is not only to deliver news but also to build a sustainable financing model through digital subscriptions.
The challenge
Digital media today constantly face the challenge of ensuring that readers can pay for content easily, quickly, and without obstacles. Denník N was looking for a solution that would allow customers to pay for subscriptions directly on its website, without redirection to external portals or any extra complicated steps.
The key was to support spontaneous purchases, as the moment a reader decides to subscribe is critical for completing the transaction. At the same time, the company aimed to reduce the number of unfinished payments and increase overall conversion, making the subscription process both more convenient for customers and more efficient for the merchant.
Tomáš Bella, Chief Digital Officer at Denník N:
“Our goal was to make payments for an article or subscription as simple as possible, ideally in just a few clicks. Speed determines whether the customer completes the purchase or not.”
The solution
Mobile wallets for recurring payments
We developer support for Apple Pay and Google Pay for recurring payments. This allowed Denník N customers to pay their subscriptions using their favorite mobile wallets – quickly, securely and without unnecessary steps.
Embedded fields for a smooth checkout
We also implemented Embedded Fields, allowing payment fields to be placed directly on Denník N’s website. As a result, customers remain on the media’s page throughout the payment process, which increases trust and minimizes abandoned transactions.
Flexible payment management via MIT
Another part of the solution was Merchant Initiated Transactions (MIT). With this feature, Denník N can use the API to fully manage the price and process of recurring payments. Automation brought convenience and flexibility.
“The ability to set up recurring payment processing directly on our side is very practical. We have everything under control, and the process runs smoothly without additional interventions.”

Customer metadata and required parameter
To make the process even smoother, we introduced Customer Metadata (Express Checkout). If a customer has their data, such as name, address, or email saved in their wallet, Denník N can retrieve it through this feature.
To avoid issues, we also added the required parameter, ensuring that the payment will not proceed without the mandatory information – in the case of media subscriptions, the key piece is the email address.
“Previously, we sometimes couldn’t locate the customer’s email. Now it’s solved. Since implementing the required parameter, everything has worked reliably and without issues.”

The results
The cooperation with finby brought clear benefits to Denník N. The payment process became not only faster and more convenient for readers but also more reliable for the merchant, resulting in a higher rate of successfully completed transactions.
Thanks to the implemented solutions, Denník N can easily and automatically obtain essential customer data that are crucial for further communication and subscription management. In addition, flexible recurring payment management on the merchant’s side provides practical control over the entire process, allowing them to set the conditions and pricing for recurring payments according to their needs.
The result is an efficient system that simplifies the merchant’s work while improving customer experience.
“The implemented solutions helped us not only increase conversion but also simplify the entire subscription process for us and our readers.”
