About Donio

Donio is a charitable technology platform that makes it quick and easy to organise fundraising campaigns to help people in difficult life situations, such as serious illness, accidents, or natural disasters, while also enabling users to contribute to someone else’s story. What makes Donio unique is that 100% of every donation goes directly to the campaign creator. Donio does not charge any commissions or fees; its operation is funded solely through voluntary contributions from donors.

Thanks to a fully digital and user-friendly environment, Donio allows campaigns to be created from anywhere, whether from home or abroad. The platform was founded with a clear mission: to make helping others easier. And it consistently delivers on this goal.

The challenge

Donating is a highly emotional decision—people act in the moment, driven by empathy and urgency. That is why the payment process must be fast, smooth, and free of unnecessary obstacles. Any delay or extra step can cause donors to abandon the transaction at a critical moment.

Donio was therefore looking for a payment partner capable of delivering seamless donation experience across both desktop and mobile devices, while removing friction at the key decision point. The priority was to fine-tune the payment process to increase transaction success rates, especially for smaller donations, while also offering modern payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, which donors increasingly expect. This shift also naturally supported Donio’s expansion into additional markets.

They also needed a frictionless payment flow, as even minimal delays can result in lost donations, along with reliable support for donations coming from social media, where many of their campaigns gain traction.

The solution

In close cooperation with Donio, we implemented a series of technical and product improvements aimed at optimising the donor experience, increasing payment success rates, and supporting the platform’s growth.

As Adam Szabó, CEO of Donio, stated:

“finby helped us remove unnecessary obstacles from the payment process. Shortening the countdown and giving us the option to disable it entirely had an immediate impact on conversion growth.”

Finby implemented flexible redirection options within the payment gateway:

  • The standard countdown shortened to 4 seconds (donors actually see it for approximately 3 seconds).
  • The option to disable the countdown entirely, enabling immediate redirection after payment.

Donio can manage these settings at any time via the Merchant Portal, an interactive, modern back-office environment that provides full control over payment operations. Within the portal, they can adjust redirection settings, monitor transactions in real time, evaluate payment performance, and configure features without requiring technical support. This eliminated unnecessary delays and noticeably improved the conversion flow.

Increased Payment Success Rates

As the partnership deepened, Donio began to see improvements in payment approval rates. As they noted:

“Our payment success rate in the Czech Republic consistently exceeds 93%. Optimisation of our 3D Secure settings played a significant role, especially for smaller donations.”

A key factor was the precise fine-tuning of 3D Secure (3DS) settings to ensure authentication was as smooth and donor-friendly as possible. Where conditions allow, low-risk and lower-value transactions can be processed with minimal friction for donors, making payments faster and more seamless. This led to higher conversions and a better overall experience.

Apple Pay & Google Pay directly on Donio

Finby implemented native support for Apple Pay and Google Pay directly on the Donio website.

As Adam Szabó, CEO of Donio, highlighted:

“Thanks to the direct integration of Apple Pay and Google Pay on our website, nearly half of our donors now pay using these methods without redirection. This has significantly improved convenience and the overall donor experience.”

Approximately 50% of donors now choose Apple Pay or Google Pay, completing their donation directly within the Donio interface, without external windows or redirects. This fast and simple process significantly reduces abandoned payments. In addition, up to 83% of donors who see the Apple Pay option on Donio actually use it.

Support for social media payments

Many Donio campaigns gain momentum on social media. We ensure that donors arriving from Facebook, Instagram, mobile wallets, or mobile browsers experience a smooth, secure, and uninterrupted payment flow.

Results

Thanks to this collaboration, the platform now benefits from a significantly smoother and more efficient payment process. Donation conversions have increased due to a more seamless payment journey, and success rates in key markets continue to grow. Moreover, approximately half of all donations are now made via Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Donations across mobile, social media, and web channels are fully optimised, and smaller donations benefit significantly from simplified 3DS authentication, which makes checkout faster and more user-friendly.

A flexible technical approach, modern payment methods, and clearly conversion-focused improvements support Donio in its mission to make helping easier, enabling more successful campaigns, more completed donations, and more stories that make a real difference where it is needed most.

Branding on the payment window

Donio also uses the option to customise the payment window to reflect its brand, enabling a fully consistent donor experience. The payment page is tailored with Donio’s logo and brand colours, ensuring donors feel secure and connected to Donio throughout the entire process. This visual continuity strengthens trust and helps maintain the emotional impulse that motivates donors to give.

Ready to grow together

Donio’s experience shows that even small improvements in the payment process can lead to a significant increase in donor satisfaction and conversion rates. Their results prove that thoughtful optimisation and modern payment options can meaningfully support platforms dedicated to helping others.

Stories like Donio’s demonstrate how a well-designed payment process can make a real difference—helping platforms retain more donors, remove unnecessary friction, and support causes that truly matter.
